Global warming is not a debated topic in science circles. That is a
media-created fallacy. Good literacy requires understanding reputable sources
and when a particular discipline has reached a consensus on an issue. The
American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Science
Foundation, and the National Academy of Sciences all claim relatively high
levels of engagement and support on this issue. It is difficult to find a
recognized science organization that truly disputes the idea--although some may
dispute smaller pieces of the evidence. Even scientists who have political
disagreement with Gore and fully support Bush still recognize the validity of
the global warming evidence. Many so-called "disputes" claimed by media
outlets like newspapers and newsTV are misreading the science writings to
create a sense of debate where there is very little real debate in science
circles. This is a literacy issue, truly. Quite fascinating. An interesting
idea for middle school and high school classes to look at, I would think. Do
mosaic folks think teachers can bring contentious topics to the table--or, I
wonder, does the reading/learning get buried in the politics of it all and make
these topics undesirable to a reading curriculum?
