" I stress the importance of going back to the story and underlining their
answer within the story. I hesitate to have them read aloud to an adult each
time
because they might not have that support in the following years classroom.
Help! I know they are capable of doing better then they do on these
assessments."

I teach first grade as well and it is a struggle with these tests. We use
Houghton Mifflin, and many of the kids are not able to read the story. I am
able to read the introduction, but not the story now that we are moving farther
into the year. As another person mentioned, have them use the PVC pipes if
this is a strategy they know. I also worked with my kids at the beginning of
the year on reading the pictures to get some ideas. Also with our program many
of the questions have pictures next to it, so they can kind of guess. What you
are doing is right, and if you can give them support go for it. The second
grade teachers know there is a big difference. Ours are even allowed to give
support at the start of the year,so they do get their feet wet next year on the
new format without having to be completely on their own. Another thought is
taking a story per unit and giving them time to read it independently, creating
your own little mini-test in the same format,
then going over it whole group or with a partner discussing how they came up
with their answers.

  Good luck!
