Little did I know the threads my questions would take!! Thanks to all for
spirited and informative discussion about fluency and comprehension. Thanks to
Elaine Garan for the other information about some whose work with fluency are
correlated to the money they make on programs. My thoughts have always been
that if the child can read with at least 90% accuracy they are getting
something from the material. Verbally stumbling over words can have many
causes for
a 4th or 5th grader which may or may not impact their comprehension. My
school district is starting to become very interested in using DIBELS and so
that
is why I've been looking at speed with some of my intervention students.
Even though I see improvement in comprehension, if their speed isn't up to par
some of the student support team members start pushing weekly monitoring of
speed! I do have kids who read fluently and quickly-but have zero
comprehension...Guess we need a happy medium! Thanks for all the comments-I've
loved
reading my thread and seeing it grow and grow!
