A few years ago I saw Ellin Keene speak about lab classrooms.I am looking
for how they are running in other schools. What are the positive and
negatives? Do teachers really benefit from them?

Heather,
As a new literacy coach this year (part-time) I offered some labsites to my
teachers. The teachers had identified an area that they felt they needed
some work in. I arranged with my principal to get coverage for the teachers,
so the entire grade level could attend. I explained to the students that I
was teaching them and the teachers. As I presented the lesson I would stop
and ask the teachers to notice certain things, talk to their partners etc.
They were given a reflection sheet to fill out, so that when we met
afterwards we had a starting point for conversations. We would meet for
about 15 minutes afterwards (longer would have been better) to discuss the
lesson and how it could be done in other classrooms. Next year I will be
including viewing a follow up lesson in each teacher's classroom.
Ideally the best scenario would be to do this weekly for about 4-6 weeks and
gradually release the teaching to another teacher with you coaching side by
side.
The teachers I worked with really enjoyed it. I received a lot of positive
feedback from it. I supposed it could be CEUable, but it does take place
during the teaching day. Think about offering PD during the day for your
teachers! It offers great opportunities.
I learned about this at Teacher's College at Columbia last summer.
