I like to start the year with:
The Year of Miss Agnes--it gets us pumped up about learning, and viewing the
world as a bigger place

Others we have enjoyed:
The Penderwicks--likeable independent characters, a favorite of my class
The Tale of Desperaux-good for teaching that most people are not thoroughly
good or bad
The Boxcar Children-independent children
My Father's Dragon-fantasy, short but lots of action
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or The BFG-lots of laughs, good for using
context for vocab
Little House on the Prairie--pioneers, historical fiction, survival, opens
discussion about Native Americans and judgmentalness; I recommend
skimming some of the lengthy descriptions to move the book along
Because of Winn-Dixie-friendship, accepting differences
The Quiltmaker's Gift-picture book, good around the holidays, about giving

Mary

Can anyone help with some good titles for grades 2, 3 and 4?
