When I had third graders in that position, I did a LOT of good read alouds
(Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Superfudge, Fudge-a-Mania...funny.),
making big words, buddy reading, and reader's workshop.  We also did buddy
writing, art and writing.  Like you said, they need to have fun or they
either have behavior problems or just don't come.  We used a DRA with them.
Kids went up an average of 5 levels.  One went up 16!
