I agree -- by reading aloud with expression and feeling teachers model for 
students true fluency.  Students need to hear how meaning can be made with the 
voice in addition to the words.

Lester Laminack said (a quote from conference notes) that if  teachers
cannot read aloud well, they should not read aloud at all.  At the time I
thought, wow, that's really harsh but I have since become a total believer.
Reading aloud in a manner that sells content, sells the book, sells the most
reluctant reader in the room, is an art form.  I used to take this for
granted but I have seen folks butcher read aloud and I now believe we should
be treating this subject far more seriously.,

>From my personal point of view, I think climate and culture are also very
important.  I have seen fifth and sixth graders equally happy and engaged
round the teacher reading aloud--complete with the rug and Holloway's
virtual lap experience but perhaps with more sprawl tolerated--as younger
kids, but not if it is messaged in anyway that this is a 'baby thing'.  My
sixth grade son talked a lot this year about missing the atmosphere his
wondrous 4-5 teacher created during read aloud.  It needs to be magical.

My other strong belief is that read aloud too often falls flat when text
selection is not treated with as much deference as reading expression.  What
we read in our busy, overscheduled days needs to be thoughtfully selected,
not just a casual grab off the nearest shelf. The best of the best just make
it look like it is.

Read aloud is not a panacea for sweaty children and odd bits of fragmented
time, it is a ritual that has to be honored and valued for the powerful tool
that it is.

Okay, suppose I might be just a tad overzealous about this issue... Nah.
