Joanne---- Read the latest edition of Jim Trelease's Read Aloud Book. It has been updated with lots o research on SSR. Also Stephen Krashen has done lots of research on this topic. I feel so comfortable making the time to have my students read independently DAILY. The key is to teach them how to select their books and have lots of reading material for them.
