Hi Debbie,
I understand what you are saying below but the union cannot side against any
one
teacher but must provide support for all teachers. It's similar to the case of
the ACLU.
There are groups that I would rather see them not support, ie. the KKK.
However, from
their perspective they have to support the idea of "civil liberties" and that
means anyone
whose civil liberties may potentially be jeopardized. Another example is
Amnesty International.
Since these organizations do not have a clear "political" point of view but
rather are non partisan,
so to speak, they must protect any one or group whose "rights" are being
violated. Personally, I
find this rather wishy washy but I can accept this from the union much more
easily than I can
from the other two groups I mentioned above. I think the reason being that I
can see how
anyone can be accused of being a "bad" teacher when that is not the case. I
know that without
a teachers' union we wouldn't be in the place we are today but much further
back. I guess my
advice would be that if you are not happy with what's going on or would like to
see some changes,
then it's time to become more involved in the union than you already are.
Just my two cents.

I admit, I am in somewhat of a bubble because I have, so far, had very good,
reasonable and rational principals. I do realize that the union is there for
the dedicated teachers, too. I, in the future, could be someone who might need
the union because I am one of those teachers who doesn't play by ALL the rules,
if the rules don't help my students. So, I retract my statement about the union
MOSTLY protecting the slackers. However, what I DO see, is that they DO protect
slackers. I know that from what I see at my school. I have often thought that
what (some) teachers do borders on criminal, taking close to 90 thousand
dollars a year from the system, coming to work and doing NOTHING all day that
resembles teaching, and then leaving with the students at the end of the day.
Why and how does this happen? In any other business, this person would be gone.
Why is this person protected???
Debbie
