I have not taught at this level but I could not fit word study into workshop at the second grade level. Instead I used my morning message to reinforce word study and found 3 30-minute blocks--you know the sort, in odd places where we were coming and going--and used these blocks for word study. Making Words once a week and then two days of center rotations (four stations) with open ended but familiar activities where the focus on the 'big word', the weekly word wall words and reviewd chunks remained constant.
