Carol, I really like your colored index cards idea....the ring seems less cumbersome than a notebook, especially when you are carrying your writer's notebook, mentor texts, etc.
Here's my thinking about the colors....if you use the colors, they don't necessarily have to represent each day of the week, only your rotation schedule....for example, you need to see all red before going on to the yellow, etc....that way if one day, you can see all of red and one yellow, that's great! If yellow needs to stretch over into two days, that's fine too. I also think the bright colors might help to liven our moods during the day, and when you go to look through notes for parent conferences, etc. you only have to search the orange cards for one student (or yellow, or whatever).
