I have taught Kindergarten and First Grade for 9 years. I too have kept a
couple baskets of my "special" books that the kids do not have access to. I
actually find that they kids like the idea. These picture books are usually
too difficult for them to read in the first place. I keep these books in a
special place in the room and I tell the kids that we are reading one of the
books from my "special" read aloud basket. They love that idea of a book is
that special. The books I put in there are chosen for different reasons - ex.
favorites with only 1 copy, old books from when I was young, books with author
signatures, etc. If the book has special meaning to me, I tell them why and
they love that too (ex. Ferdinand: That book was one of my favorite stories
when I was a child and I would read it over and over again). I think that you
can have baskets set aside for any reason - all you have to do is teach them
about the rituals and routines of these books. I also have a basket of books
that I am reading aloud that I keep next to my rocking chair. During reading
stations, my students are allowed to read those books with a partner. That way
they are books that although they may be too difficult for them, they have
either heard them recently or will hear them in the next week. Hope this
helps in any way.
