My district has purchased the new assessment for our reading intervention
department. We've had trouble with the DRA because the classroom teachers
started using them and the kids would know the books, also the upper grade
classroom teachers were given the QRI-4 which is what some of us reading
teachers
were using. Last week we had to screen 28 second graders. The assessment is
quick and easy, although we did not use the writing portion yet. If anyone has
had Reading Recovery training it will seem very familiar. Introduce the text,
do the running record, then have a "conversation" about the text. Unlike the
DRA, prompts don't count against the child. The book is also left in front of
the child to see if they go back in the text, etc. Then the evaluator does a
miscue analysis and fluency evalulation. I want to see what it's like with
my 5th graders and will report back later, but so far we like the assessment.
Michelle, AIS NY-2-5
