She tricked the neighbors by giving them a different broom.  Then she  
painted the broom white and they thought it was a ghost, therefore  
got scared, and moved away.  She never had a problem with it again  
and the broom continues to work for her!
Oh, I love Chris Van Allsburg books!!!  His newest, Proditity ( I  
think this is how it is spelled) is wonderful too - great for inference!
