Please help me to understand persuasive texts and
persuasive writing. I love the book "I Wanna Iguana"
but it doesn't really seem to be a persuasive text as
much as a bargaining book format as I see it. I
thought that persuasive text should have reasons for
and against something. I see this book being a boy
begging his mom for the iguana and making promises
rather than trying to persuade her that having the pet
would be a good idea.

Admittedly, I've had a hard time teaching my third
graders persuasive writing genre. The most successful
I've been at it is to give them a topic where they
have to convince/persuade me to do something that they
have no vested interest in my doing it or not. For
example, their writing on why I should go see a movie
of their choice produced legitimate reasons for going
to a movie. Whereas, when they tried to convince me
to have a longer recess, it was full of promises and
begging rather than legitimate reasons to use the
time.

One book that I'd love to be able to afford that does
seem to meet the criteria of persuasive text is Should
There Be Zoos? I just can't see paying $50 or more
for a 32 page book.
