Island by Gordon Korman is great! There are at least 3 books in the series. Very exciting and intense. I read them to my fifth graders and they loved the books. Also, Star in the Storm by Joan Hiatt Harlow. There's a sequel to that book as well. It's about a dog that's a hero, which always makes for a great story. Where the Red Fern Grows is another great read aloud, if you can get through the ending! Also, anything by Gary Paulsen is great for older kids. I also liked to throw in a picture book now and then with my fifth graders. Patriccia Polacco's books, like Pink and Say are picture books, but have very adult context and themes. I hope that helps!
