I am not sure what grade you teach but as a Kindergarten teacher I can tell you that I know my students are making gains because the mini-lessons are directly related to what they are doing and they have true meaning to the students' reading strengths and weaknesses. Once my students are in independent reading time, they are practicing what strategies we have worked on in the mini-lesson at their independent level. When they are working in reading stations, they once again are practicing these strategies but this time with a partner. During this time, I have the opportunity to meet for conferences and small groups. When we come to close our workshop, my students are able to discuss what our mini-lesson was about and how they practiced that during the workshop time. I know that the workshop model is valuable and effective. This is prescriptive teaching! Debbie
