I think it is wonderful that you are increasing your students' stamina for reading with the independent reading. One thing we have done to fit in phonics/spelling is use Words Their Way. We do it as the first part of the Guided Reading session, introducing the word sort for the week on Monday. Then students either practice their sorts as bellwork or as the first 5 minutes of Independent Reading. Grammar is embedded into the Writers Workshop. Vocabulary is harder. Some teacher use the word Study notebooks from Words Their Way and students keep their own lists of interesting words from their independent reading. These are shared with the class and added to a word wall using some ideas from Janet Allen. Other teachers introduce 10 words each week from Time For Kids. Students make semantic maps and discuss the words with a weekly vocab quiz. Hope this helps
