Some to try might be: (based on liking Harry) Anything by Alice Hoffman - her books are shorter and are fast reads, interesting, usually have a twist to them The Hero and the Crown also fantasy and the protagonist is a female The Blue Sword These are by Robin McKinley...she also rewrites Fairy tales and those are very good Deerskin A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray One of my favorite authors is Nancy Farmer. Your daughters may think these look too young for them but the stories are intriguing. The Sea of Trolls is on the lines of Harry. There is a new sequel out to this also that I have read yet. Her Science fiction books The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm + The House of the Scropion are also very good. A different flavor would be Holocaust books. I just read The Book Thief (Markus Zusak) and it is excellent. Also a good science fiction with some romance mixed in is The Barcode Tattoo (Suzanne Weyn) Kay Kuenzl-Stenerson Literacy Coach Merrill Middle School In reading, there is a sort of half-and half mixture. the book must be good, but the reader must also be active. Ralph Waldo Emerson
