Hi,
Picture books are hard to think of...have you considered poetry?  Many poems 
deal with transitions.  Nikki Giovani, Maya Angelou, Robert Frost....his 
"Road Not Taken" or "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" are great for 8th 
graders.
