I do see what you mean about kids visualizing the second picture..... one of the kids actually helped me demystify this for the group... he said first you look, then you connect, then you visualize the next thing.... That said volumes for me..... in order to visualize the in between picture you must connect to what is happening first.. then connect... and sort of infer ..... so that the next in between image materializes to create the mental image.... we had large discussions about how learning style affects the kind of image a kid might get... no surprise that auditory learners get lots of sound in their imagery,...;. visual learners pick up on lots of physical details... and so forth an so on....
