Yes, Encounter by Jane Yolen came to my mind first. I use it around Columbus Day, but it could be used at any time. Some of the pictures would be a little scary for younger children. It's also great for similes and personification.
And I believe a Gary Paulson book, Canyons, alternates chapters by various characters -- maybe a young Native American boy and the ghost of his grandfather?? -- It's been years since I used this. It's for middle school students, if I recall correctly.
