The ocean picture with the snorkler and deep sea diver can refer to 2 types: 1. The child who just reads the words and doesn't think about the meaning 2. The type of reading that asks the child to skim through the material, looking for a specific part compared to the type of reading that requires the child to go deep into the material and reflect or synthesize.
I just started talking about going deep into the reading with my students, and now I'll see them using hand and arm movements, showing that they're going deep into the print. One of them even compared it to licking off the frosting of a cake instead of eating the whole piece. I think you could find many examples like this. I'm going to a fabric store this afternoon and hopefully will find something for the ocean background. Then on to clipart.com for the figures. Keepin' it time efficient!
