This is in response to the Hatchet discussion:

You should contact your local Boy Scout Troop. In our county, all fifth
graders at all schools read Hatchet and then the Boy Scout Camp offers a
survival workshop. While the book is being read, the Boy Scout troop
leader comes in and does several small workshops showing them how to use a
compass, how to start a fire with a flint, and other interesting things.
Then they go on a field trip to the Boy Scout Camp and the troop leaders
give survival tips. They then go into the woods. Kids break into teams
and try to construct the best lean-to shelter the fastest. Then they get
to gather leaves and try to start a fire using the flint. Finally, they
go back to the camp area and eat a "poor man's supper" which is a
hamburger patty, potatoes, and onions cooked in foil. The kids have so
much fun and is the highlight of their fifth grade year. I think the Boy
Scouts charges $5 a student. The kids who can bring it in, do and the
others, the school pays for.

I taught fifth grade one year and I swore I would never go back. However,
I really enjoyed doing that unit!
