Sheila, I've never been part of a summer school program like the one you
described but that sounds like fun. One question I had was whether you think
kids will read the books on their own before school. I know that has been a
real issue in the schools I've worked in before. If that was an issue, you
could always stick to picture books and read them as read alouds on Mondays.
As far as topics, I love the idea of fairytales. You could also do
fractured fairytales and compare fairytales from around the world- there are
TONS of Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood stories from different cultures.
Along those same lines, porquoi tales are a lot of fun. These are another way
to make the books multicultural in nature and are really fun to read. A great
writing connection would be for kids to write and illustrate their own porquoi
tales. Finally, animals always seem to be a favorite topic, no matter what
the age, especially if kids would be able to make dioramas showing their
animals habitats. You could even take it a level further and study endangered
animals. ~Kecia
