Love your idea about teaching a retelling unit before we give the DRA2 in
Sept.! I am going to suggest this to my team. Unfortunately, our district
gives us a window of time in which to administer the DRA2, and it will be in
Sept.---no changing that. But we can start from the first week working on
retelling, and I am quite partial to The Power of Retelling for that. I
totally agree that we need to help the kids understand what it is we are
asking them to do! (Please don't give me an assessment on my knowledge of
physics!) And I totally agree with you that the lower level guided reading
books don't tend to be that great for teaching retelling. I am thinking I
will be using big books & working on the retelling during shared
reading-----but am not sure how I will transfer from the high teacher
support of shared reading to increased student responsibility for the task.
. . . hmmmmm . . . .Need to do some brainstorming with colleagues on this
one . . .
