This weekend I was looking in a box of some old books that I had a child and I found 3 "Student Reading Record" forms from when I was in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. These are some of the books I read as a middle schooler, so I thought these may be some good books that your students may be interested in. Most of these book have female main characters and have different cultural backgrounds. Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell -A girl living alone on an island Black Star, Bright Dawn by Scott O'Dell -A girl takes her father's place in an Alaskan dog sled race Number the Stars by Lois Lowry (This was one of my favorites) -A girl helps her Jewish friend escape the Nazis Shabanu: Daughter of the Wind by Suzanne Fisher Staples -A Pakistani girl not wanting to obey her father's wishes of an arranged marriage Phoenix Rising By Karen Hesse The Music of Dolphins by Karen Hesse - A girl is raised by dolphins. when the coast guards find her she slowly starts to learn how to speak.
