Mary--
I have found Pinnell and Fountas' new book The Continuum of Literacy
Learning grade 3-8 (also one for K-2 and one for K-8) to be really helpful
to think about guided reading for the intermediate grades and beyond. The
Guided Reading section has a few pages for each guided reading level (L-Z)
which includes bulleted list of "goals" teachers can select from to help
students think "within the text, beyond the text, and about the text".
For each level, it also includes suggestions for word study and a
description of text characteristics.

Other sections of the book are organized by grade level and list goals for
different aspects of Reading/Writing Workshop: Interactive Read Aloud,
Word Study, Writing, Writing about Reading, etc. and all have goals for
"within, beyond, and about the text".

I'm wondering if anyone is using guided reading in upper elementary. It
was written into our strategic plan, yet no one seems to know how it works
in 4th and 5th grade. I 've been able to find a few resources to
purchase, but haven't yet. One is from Fountas and Pinnell, and the other
was from Four Blocks (Big Blocks model). Basically I'd like to know which
resource would be better to buy, and also if anyone can tell me what
guided reading looks like and involves at this level. Is it effective?
Do you it like or dislike? Pros/cons?

Thanks,
Mary
