Some suggestions for reading could be Esperanza’s Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan
or Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech- Sharon G. Flake has many great books
such as The Skin I’m In and Begging for Change that are high interest and
geared towards girls. A beautiful novel that I love is Ida B by Kathrine
Hannigan. Also, The Tale of Despereaux is adored by all students!
As far as short stories go, there are a few anthologies that come to mind.
Crime Files by Jeremy Brown- These might work because they are super short
and give a scenario that you have to try to figure out.Afterwards the
answer is on the next page! Also, Richard Peck is another great author of
short stories! My personal favorite is “Pricillia and the Wimps.” This
comes from the book called Past, Perfect, Present Tense by Richard Peck-
There are a whole bunch of stories in this book- Another great story in “By
The Time you Read This” found in a book called Gone from Home by Angela
Johnson. Avi also writes short stories. One of his books is called What Do
Fish Have To Do With Anything. Hope this helps.Good luck :)
