I apologize in advance if you get this twice. My half-finished post disappeared into cyberspace. The 6th graders in my school are currently wild about the new James Patterson series that begins with Maximum Ride. It is about a "flock" of kids who escape from a laboratory where evil scientists are combining human and animal DNA to create superior life forms. All the kids in the "flock" have wings and can fly. Their leader is Maximum Ride, a 14 year old human/avian hybrid with a lot of attitude and a big heart. The chapters are very short, and the writing is crisp and easy for kids to follow. I think it might be a good fit for the girl you are tutoring. It is very high interest with minimal reading challenges. I like to introduce series books to reluctant readers because if they like the first one, they are motivated to read more. Once they know the characters, it is easier to read the subsequent books too.
