But don't we all read better when we are reading text of high interest or on a 
topic that we're knowledgeable about?  Isn't that what most of our reading is 
about?  When we need to read something on an unfamiliar topic we fall back on a 
variety of strategies to help us get through the reading and this reading 
usually has an explicit purpose - fixing an appliance, setting up a new game or 
program, etc.  I don't see this kind of reading as negative.

 about something of high interest.
