I would like to stay on-line with the literacy closet-book room discussion
because I am also interested. I am the Literacy Coach of a 6-7-8 middle
school. We have a book room in which we have book sets of novels, fiction and
some non-fiction, and also some genre, thematic collections. We also have
folders of teaching ideas that accompany some of our book sets. I would be
happy to answer any questions about how we work the book room. I would also be
interested in knowing more about titles of non-fiction for middle school that
are included in ms book rooms.

Hi Nikki,
Just to clarify, I think we have a "literacy closet" but we call it a bookroom
- a middle school version of what is described in Fountas & Pinnell's Guided
Reading Books. Is this what you are looking for? My email is listed below so
we can visit off-list.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with establishing/using a literacy
closet at a secondary level - specifically middle school. If you are a middle
school that uses a literacy closet I'd love to chat with you! We're in the
early stages of creating one at our school.

Thanks,

My junior high (soon to be middle school) is looking to create a
bookroom as well. I would love to be part of this discussion, too.

We do have a literacy closet in our middle school. We've had it for about 10
years, but it has been beefed up in the last five. I am the literacy coach
and am also in charge of it. If you would like to talk to me off list or have
a phone conversation, I can be reached at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm in Melrose
Park, Illinois, so you might want to organize a field trip!

What is a literacy closet?

Does anyone know the difference between these two comprehension
programs:
Making Meaning by Developmental Studies Center and Comprehension
Strategies Kit by Sundance Publishers?

Any input you can give will be greatly appreciated as our Title one
site is looking into purchasing some extra comprehension support for
our pullout groups.

Thanks,
Julie

Sundance materials have built in gradual release. They are consistent. They
are very well written. I appreciate that they were written by Linda
Gambrell. High quality. I have several schools I work with that are
awesome!

Thank you everyone for your enthusiasm, encouragement, and your help! Being so
new to this (both the position of Lit & Assessment Coach AND the entire Reading
arena) I didn't realize that the term 'literacy closet' was simply what our
elementary schools used in reference to Fountas & Pinnell's description of a
'book room' in their book Matching Books to Readers . LeeAnn sent a great
description of what her ms has:
...the books are in three categories. In one category is chapter books
that teachers can use for literature circles.
I try to gather them around possible themes so that a teacher can have
students reading books for lit circles that
are focused around a common theme. The second category is picture books in
sets sized for half the class. I pair
two of these sets around a common theme and then develop a scenario
question that students have to write to
answer and include details from the books to support their answers. This
is modeled after one of the writing prompts
on our state test. The third category is single picture books. These are
for teachers to use as mentor texts when
teaching reading strategies or writing traits. I've been trying to get all
of them into a data base with information
about which strategy/trait each works best with. Then when teachers come
to me needing, say, a book to use
for teaching word choice, I can find one for them quickly and give them
the choice of several...

I'm anxious to know this as well, as I'm currently budgeting. The only thing I
know right now is that Making Meaning includes a typical social, community,
collaborative slant that Sundance nor Heinemann does. It seems to me so far
that it's like Sundance enriched by the Developmental Studies Center.

Nicole,
Would you be willing to share the titles of this category with the list? This
is exactly what I am planning on doing in my 7th grade classroom! In Michigan,
our students need to write about a common theme between a fiction and
nonfiction reading selection. I would also like to see some of the
prompts/questions that you use.
