Boys this age and older typically like graphic novels, non-fiction,
adventure fiction, magazines on sports, etc. I find that my first and second
grade boys are as particular about their reading selections as older boys
can be. I try to provide a variety of reading material for my kiddos. Girls
will read boys books, but boys will not read girl books.
If you are interested in boys literacy issues you might want to consider
reading William Brozo "To Be a Boy, To Be a Reader". He covers a lot of
research into boys literacy issues and has organized several archetypes that
boys typically fit into concerning literacy. Also, archived copies of 'The
Reading Teacher', and 'Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy" have many
informative articles on boys and literacy issues. You might want to check
them out.
