I'm always looking for ideas for great short texts, as Ellin recommends using. In the past, I've used chapters (or whole book) from Out of the Dust (Karen Hesse). I've also used The House on Mango Street, which is commonly used at the high school level.
Next year, I'll be teaching only grades 3 and 5 as a reading specialist. Does anyone think I'd be crazy to use the above-stated texts? Any suggestions for other vignettes like Mango Street? Ellin's cornerstone website has so many great resources, and I've tried to compile a list of some books used with lesson plans. If you have used any of the following and have liked them, I'd be so grateful for your feedback: Sachiko Means Happiness Gettin' Through Tuesday (Melrose Cooper) Tight Times (Barbara Shook Hazen) I Could Not Keep Silent: The Life of Rachel Carson Olive Button is a Sissy Amazing Grace June 29, 1999 (David Weisner) Mem Fox (Cynthia Rylant) Brave Irene A Chair for My Mother Poetry Speaks to Children Love That Dog Thank you, in advance, for your help. I hope this wasn't obnoxious. _______________________________________________ Mosaic mailing list [email protected] To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.
