I have also had great luck with reluctant middle schoolers reading the Anthony
Horowitz Alex Rider Books. Hey, I like them myself! They are fast paced and
not predictable. Some 4th graders could read these, 5th and 6th grade do well
with them. Anthony Horowitz's other new series (The Gatekeepers) is also very
exciting, but it is fantasy/sci fic and it is more complicated to understand.
Another series that is exciting is Christopher Pike's series that starts with
ALOSHA. That is also fantasy and has a lot of action. It would also be for
some 4th, 5th graders and higher. The main character is a girl but it is not a
"girl" type of book.

Sorry, I hit my send button too soon. 4th and 5th grade with some guidance,
middle school definitely.
The students need to learn the British words for everyday things - fag is a
cigarette, biscuit is a cookie, etc.
