To All, Thanks to all who gave me suggestions for a book I needed to develop character for an ELA/SS culture and empathy lesson. I chose The Butterfly by Patricia Palocco. It was perfect because of the time both of the stories take place. We compared it to "The Cay" which takes place in the Carribean. The Butterfly takes place in Germany. Both take place during World War II. Both stories have characters with strong character traits and clearly the students were able to make empathetic connections by comparing and contrasting the characters from different cultures.
