It has long been a dictate in our district that pieces "published" in the hallway should be as perfect or correct as possible. This started with a visit from a school board member I believe. I feel we're endanger of discouraging teachers and students from writing and sharing, but I know it is a battle I can't win. When we are sharing a piece that has been worthy of weeks of work, I go out of my way to take the time to be the student's editor and correct as well as I can and require them to make the changes. I figure it is a worthy lesson. But I would have to limit the amount of writing and public sharing we do in order to get that degree of correctness every time, and feeling that sharing is a powerful motivator to the writer I had to find alternatives. So, there are times I will make a sign that says Rough Draft....editing under construction ....just to share the ideas. I keep thinking I would like to train a cadre of parent editors that I can invite in the last week of publishing and have kids sign up for a 1:1 session. I think it provides an opportunity for some personal and powerful learning. Gina 6th grade _________________________________________________________________ Going green?
