One more experience to add to the just right book talk.

Last book study, I did allow my kids to choose their own books. One girl chose
Letters to Rifka, which was really above her level, but due to her interest in
the Holocaust, she ranks it as one of her favorites.

One of my boys chose Left for Dead (nonfiction book about WWII) and could not
finish it, despite the fact that he was very interested.

So the element of genre as well as how wide is the discrepancy in levels are
other factors.

I plan to make sure I have moments when the kids have total choice (no matter
what their level) and moments when I place them in books because of the
instructional benefits of knowing it is their instructional level.

It seems to always be some form of balance that answers my teaching dilemmas.
