Suzanne, Please send us your passion. I think there is a very big difference between guided reading and lit circles. In lit circles the onus is on the children. Today I was actually moved to tears listening to the passionate discussion of third graders when reading Love That Dog (poetry and one of my favorites - thanks AB!)) and There's an Owl in the Shower. There discussion is so much richer and more meaningful to them than something I could orchestrate in a guided reading lesson.
We are starting full math investigations next year. I feel your pain! I don't mind teaching math but it is definitely more my struggle than my passion. I could just cry. I have spent thirty minutes writing about lit circles and I lost the internet connection. If only I would do what I tell the kids to do. Do it on Word and back it up?!!!!!!! The gistof what I was writing however was, what is the difference between a lit circle and guided reading? I sense a cross over in the discussions here. It's been a discussion we've had a our school. I'm happy to discuss how I see it...but don't want to bore you all to tears with my 'passionate monologue'. By the way, we are starting EVERY DAY MATH next year and to say I am terrified, is an understatement. Any comments (as it's outside this forum) on that to [EMAIL PROTECTED] would be gratefully appreciated.
