Just a thought on kids having difficulty with literal questions. At the beginning of the year I teach QAR (question answer relatiobnship) or Levels of questions. Level 1 would be the literal questions which require simply finding the sentence that contains the answer. (mostly you need the book) Level 11 requires piecing together pparts of the text to draw conclusions, or main ideas, or summaries. (you need the book and your brain) Level 111...Your opinion or thoughts about topics, issues, events, etc. in the book. (you really don't need the book, just your brain) We do lots of practice with these, and over time they come to realize that teachers, tests, etc. rarely ask the literal Level 1 questions, but they understand that they exist and how to look back for them.
