I am in my fifth year of teaching 2nd grade and every year I have had some
very low readers. While I do send them to our reading specialist, I feel I
need to be able to offer basic "reading" skills, beyond just the reactive
approach of guided reading where you see where a child is struggling and fix
that one trouble spot for that lesson. I can't seem to find a class at any
of the local colleges or workshops that focus just on this aspect of
reading. I am fine in teaching comprehension skills, but feel I am all over
the map on my approach to help struggling readers with decoding. Any advice
on a structured, proactive approach to teaching these kids? Thanks. Caroline
