I have done it both ways--choice reading spots and must read at the 
desk--always depends on the group.  I have had fifth and sixth graders that 
want and need 45 minutes of read time.  Not every year, and not at the start of 
the year, but often enough.  It is great when it happens because independent 
conferences and reading groups take off!
