G/T titles for 6th and 7th grade - here are my suggestions: Ender's Game,
Tangerine, House of the Scorpion, Life As We Knew It, or The Book Thief

Hi, I've been absent from this list for a while since I've been busy with work
for my class. However, I have the opportunity to interview for a 6th grade
reading position. Could you make suggestions for good information on what I
would do differently in 6th grade? I've taught 2nd and 4th, so it would be
great if you could suggest one or two books that would lead me the right
direction for possibly making the transition. I'd like to read a little ahead
of time so that I'm prepared for the interview. I haven't taught in middle
school, but reading is my love so I think it would be awesome!

Hi,
I was just chosen to be the Literacy Coach/Reading Instructional Support
Teacher/Gifted and Talented Teacher at my charter school (K-7 this year, going
K-8 next year). One of my new responsibilities will be to teach an elective to
middle school students and my Assistant Principal suggested a book club. The
problem is that even though there is a push for G/T at my school, I haven't had
a chance to see if the children are truly gifted or if they are highly able and
not being challenged, which can make choosing a book tricky.
I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good 6th-7th grade novel for a first
choice in the book club since I will need to order before school starts without
knowing who my students will be. The expected size will be 9-15 students at
the most.

Thanks
Lisa

Lisa,

I ran an intergenerational book club for seventh graders and an adult
partner. We read The Schwa Was Here and it was a real hit!! Author is Neal
Shusterman.
