Both of these spellings would be considered pretty sound for a first grade
student in control of sounds (and probably because they match his speech).
I realize that this is a much older kid, but did you say whether his hearing
had ever been tested?

Not since he was an infant. There is a family history of hearing loss so
all of the kids were tested right after they were born. They do do a
hearing
test at our health screening in school. I never gave that a thought.

The way he hears sounds can impact the way he learns to associate sound with
symbol. It probably is not hearing related, but it would be a shame if that
were the issue.

Lori, Toby, and Janelle,
Thank you for your ideas. I liked them all and now I really can focus on
one of them. I remember seeing a picture that had an optical illusion when
I took Steven Covey's Seven Habits class. I will research that.
Thanks,
Linda B

John Sheffelbine(California) has a decoding program where students learn to
quickly recognize common syllables. I don't know the name of it.

Hi Everyone,
Sorry about this off topic response but you're the best resource that I
have
right now. My son is going into the 4th grade. He has already repeated
Kindergarten because he wasn't "developmentally ready". His DRA score at
the
end of 3rd grade was an early 2nd. His ScanTron test (if you're familiar
with
it) also indicated trouble in reading. I'm not stupid, I know that there
is
a problem but I teach 5th grade and have been not so patiently waiting to
see
what was going to happen. He's done summer camps etc. NOW...our school is
looking into an online program called "Let's Go Learn". His evaluation
shows
that his oral vocabulary is high 4th grade, but his word recognition is low
1st grade. Doesn't this scream visual tracking and/or perception problem
to
you? I'm too close to the subject. He doesn't like school or reading, but
I
can understand why.
Any comments on the subject?
Thanks,
Michele

It does sound like it might be auditory. I may have missed an earlier
post...is he currently in speech? I would suggest going back to the
beginning of the spectrum and work on letter-sound correspondence, rhyming,
isolating sounds, etc., and go onto the phonics piece. I know there are some
publishers who make phonetic books for older children. Reading aloud
stories on topics he enjoys, would also be a great model for him.
Hang in there! :)
