There is a book called Blackberries in the Dark and though it is loss of a family member, I do think that friendships exist between children and grandparents. And it looks to be about a third grade level!!
Thanks to all for suggestions, by the way. While books on CD is certainly an option (and one we are suggesting), the fact of the matter is that IF a student can read a book that will support the class discussion the go old fashioned way, we feel that will offer more inclusion into the process of shared study.
