Some shorter novels I would suggest are: The Forgotten Door, On My Honor,
Harris and Me, Granny Torrelli Makes Soup, The Birthday Room, Indigo, Green
Angel, Step by Wicked Step (each chapter is a different story about a step
parent), The Higher Power of Lucky, Gossamer, Edward's Eyes.

I am working with a curriculum initiative this summer. Our middle level
readers will be doing one novel study per year (themed with CHOICES for
readers). Our classrooms often contained severely delayed readers and if
you could suggest reading at or below the 4th grade level related to these
themes, it would be much appreciated.

There is a book called Blackberries in the Dark and though it is loss of a
family member, I do think that friendships exist between children and
grandparents. And it looks to be about a third grade level!!

Thanks to all for suggestions, by the way. While books on CD is certainly
an option (and one we are suggesting), the fact of the matter is that IF a
student can read a book that will support the class discussion the go old
fashioned way, we feel that will offer more inclusion into the process of
shared study.
