I set up an independent reading program. It took about 4 weeks at the
beginning of the school year to get them independent for about 45 minutes to
an hour so I could work with individuals and small groups. Plan to meet
with your neediest kids the most often during the week. You don't have to
see everyone in a small group every day.

Subject: [MOSAIC] Reading Workshop and Departmentalization

Hello group!

I have been a lurker for a while now and I've been really interested in the
discussion about reading workshop, lit circles and STW. I went back into the
classroom this past school year and I'm currently teaching 6th grade
Reading. I implemented the Toolkit this last school year and absolutely
loved it. I am anxiously awaiting our state test results and should have
those results within the next week. One thing I felt that I struggled with
however was getting a good reading workshop flow when I have only 45-50
minutes with each of my classes. I would love to hear from some folks who
teach reading in a departmentalized situation such as myself and tell me how
you scheduled your week. I am especially interested in what students were
doing while you met with small groups or individuals. Did anyone use centers
with students at this age?

Thanks for any advice you can send my way!
