We started by reading some professional books together: Strategies that Work or Reading with Meaning. Some of us voluntarily read more: Starting With Comprehension and/or Comprehension Connections. We bought the Steph Harvey's Comprehension Toolkit and the mentor teacher and I volunteered to do model lessons from the first module. My best piece of advice: be patient with yourself. If this is brand new to you, give yourself time and permission to make mistakes. Try to watch others teach the strategies and invite a non-evaluative colleague in to watch you teach and give you feedback. Time and curriculum demands were our demons...we tried to eliminate parts of the reading curriculum that we knew the kids had mastered and substituted strategy teaching and we have never looked back since! Good luck with your efforts. Jennifer In a message dated 6/26/2008 11:05:29 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
What I wonder....for those of you that have been part of the growth of a professional learning community using Comprehension strategies, and have witnessed the positive impact, would you share the approach you took? Is there anything in particular you did to get started? What is the one piece of advice/experience/wisdom you would share for those of us just embarking on this venture? What obstacles did you face and how did you face them? Mary Helen _______________________________________________ **************Gas prices getting you down?
