Hi Erica and welcome,
One simple thing you can do is take an inventory of their interests. Use the
Carolyn Burke one. I'm sure that Nancy can point you in the right direction or
if you google it I'm sure you'll find it. The inventory asks kids questions
about their perceptions of reading and it gives you an idea of what kinds of
books they might find appealing. Or, you can just ask them what books they've
read lately or what do they want to learn more about. If you interact with
kids during a choice writing time you will be able to get hints of topics that
might be appealing to them. I have found that having lots of non fiction books
in my classroom appeals to boys. Another thing that has worked for me is to do
a lot of read alouds by authors I think my students will like and then I will
point them in the direction of other books by the same author. I try to look
for books that have boy protagonists since when I reflected upon this I
discovered that my tendency was to read aloud books that appealed more to the
girls in my classroom. I'm sure you will get many more good ideas on this list.

Hello my name is Erica Thomas and I am in Nancy Creech's class at WSU.
Currently we are reading the book Mosaic of Thought. I work in a school
district with 5th and 6th grade and majority of my students are ELL(English
Language Learners). Most of my students especially the boys don't like to read
the books that are provided for them. My question is, What can I do to get
these students more involved in reading?
