Three strategies that have helped me are: 1) Discuss the meaning of the word and then have the students draw their own picture of the word/meaning. This helps the student remember because it's their own visual. Share the illustrations if someone is having a difficult time drawing and/or model your own drawings at first. 2) Have the students act out the meanings of the vocabulary words and have the other students guess the correct word. They really enjoy doing this! 3) I have also had the students match a vocabulary word with a "student-friendly" definition and an illustration when practicing the new words that have been introduced. All of these are quick practices that can be done in 5-10 minutes. First time writing in...Denise Glowaski
